Why vacuum?
Vacuum packaging is an effective way to extend the shelf life of a product and to protect it against external influences. Because air is removed during this process, oxygen is also removed. With food products, this prevents aerobic micro-organisms from spoiling the food.
But airtight packaging is also ideal for many non-food products. You can think of large and / or valuable products such as pillows, money, electronic components, parts, jewelry and watches. The list of these products is endless. You can't think of it as crazy or it will be vacuum packed.
The principle
The product in the vacuum bag is placed in the chamber. The open side of the bag lies over the sealing bar. When closing the lid, the machine will automatically complete the vacuum process. The stages in the vacuum process are: vacuuming, gas injection (optional), sealing and (Soft Air) aeration.
Regulating the vacuum process
The first phase of the packaging cycle is to remove the air from the product, the bag and the chamber. Once the desired amount of air has been removed, the machine will proceed to the next stage. The second phase involves adding gas or sealing the bag.
You can control the vacuum process in 4 different ways:
  • time control (set to time)
  • sensor control (set by percentage)
  • sensor control with boiling point detection
  • Time control
Set the desired duration. (An average cycle ranges from 15 to 40 seconds).
The vacuum pump will vacuum for the set time, regardless of whether the intended ultimate vacuum has been reached.
The duration of the vacuuming depends on the product and the desired final vacuum. You can easily adjust the time accordingly.
Sensor control
Set the desired ultimate vacuum to the correct percentage (0 to 99%).
The vacuum pump will evacuate until the set ultimate vacuum is exactly reached.
Regardless of the volume of the product, the set ultimate vacuum is always achieved.
Advantages of sensor control
Certainty: you get a constant end result (always exactly the same ultimate vacuum).
Ease of use: you do not have to adjust the time setting every time.
Optimal cycle time: the machine stops after reaching the ultimate vacuum.
Control with boiling point detection (Liquid Control)
Moist or liquid products can quickly reach boiling point during vacuuming. Moist products can even boil cold. That is why Henkelman has equipped sensor control with an additional option: the Liquid Control function. When you activate this function, the sensor will quickly and accurately detect the vapor phase of a moist or liquid product. This prevents the product from reaching boiling point during vacuuming. This way you avoid harmful consequences for the product and the machine.
Benefits of Liquid Control:
  • The product does not lose moisture.
  • The packaging and the machine do not get dirty.
  • The oil in the pump retains its quality.
  • Rusting of the pump is prevented.
  • Optimal cycle time, because vacuuming is no longer than necessary.
  • No spoilage because products do not 'cook'.

Why gas injection?
product-pic.png After vacuuming, the bag is ready to be sealed. You can still inject gas before sealing. This technique is also called MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging). Usually this is done to increase the shelf life of the product, to provide extra protection and / or to prevent discoloration of the product. Usually a mixture of nitrogen (N2) and carbon dioxide (CO2) is used. Oxygen (O2) can be added to this combination. Recently, the use of argon (Ar) has been increasing because it has the same neutral gas properties as nitrogen (N2).
Application
Examples of products in which gas injection is common are: sliced lettuce, leafy vegetables, minced meat, steak, cooked fish, baked products, chips and ready meals. Which gas mixture is most suitable depends on the product. Your gas supplier can best inform you about the optimal composition. A special oxygen pump is available for gas mixtures with more than 20% oxygen (O2).
Service
  • Connect the gas bottle to the gas nipple
  • Open the gas bottle.
  • Set the gassing time or percentage.
  • After vacuuming, the machine will inject gas
  • The vacuum bag is sealed
  • The packaging is air-free, but does contain the imported gas mixture special

Nitrogen (N2) and Argon (Ar) eliminate traces of moisture,
Carbon dioxide (CO2) inhibits the growth of bacteria and fungi,

Sealing: completely as desired
After vacuuming and possibly gassing, the bag is ready to be sealed. With the right sealing solution, the product is effectively protected against external influences.
Which sealing system is best for your situation? It depends on:
  • the type of vacuum bag (PA / PE, shrink bags, aluminum coated bags, etc.);
  • the thickness of the vacuum bag;
  • the desired seal;
  • your special requests or requirements.
Henkelman offers the following sealing solutions:
  • Double seal: 2 x 3.5 mm convex seal seam;
  • Cut-off seal: 1 x 3.5 mm convex seal seam and 1 x 1.1 mm round cutting wire;
  • 1-2 Trennseal: 1 x 3.5 mm convex seal seam + 1 x 1.1 mm round cutting seam / for independent time settings (shrink bags);
  • Wide seal: 1 x 8.0 mm flat seal seam;
  • Bi-Active Seal: sealing bars at the top and bottom and with 1 x 5.0 mm flat seal seam (thick and aluminum vacuum bags).
Soft Air protects product and packaging
After the bag has been sealed, air is let into the room through the aeration valve. As a result, the atmospheric pressure inside and outside the chamber becomes the same, after which the lid can open. This can be done in two ways: normal aeration or aeration with Soft Air function.
  • Normal aeration
  • The valve opens completely and lets the air back into the room.
  • The vacuum bag encloses the packaged product powerfully and quickly.
  • Some products and bags can be damaged by this.
  • Aeration with soft-air function
  • Air is gradually let into the room (based on the set time).
  • The vacuum bag gradually encloses the product in a controlled manner.
  • Optimal protection of products and vacuum bag is thus guaranteed.
This is how the Soft Air function works
  • Set the desired aeration period.
  • The bag will slowly enclose the product.
Soft Air is ideal for:
  • Food: satay, T-bone steaks, lamb racks, spare ribs, etc.
  • Non-food: screws, nuts, electronics parts, PCBs, knives, etc.

  • Handy: pump maintenance program
The pump is the heart of your vacuum packaging machine and must remain in perfect condition. Every Henkelman machine is therefore equipped with a pump conditioning program. It is easy to activate at the touch of a button.
The Pump Conditioning Program: Conditioning Program
  • removes moisture from the oil in the pump;
  • cleans the pump and prevents corrosion;
  • switch on by pressing the C button.
Easy swing
Smooth opening and closing
Opening and closing the lid of Henkelman machines is easy. Thanks to the ergonomic design of the double chambers, this requires minimal effort.
Henkelman makes it even easier with Easy Swing. With the push of a button you can have the lid lift automatically at the desired time. Easy Swing can be installed on the Polar double rooms.
The advantages of the Easy Swing system are:

  • opening and closing is even smoother;
  • moving the lid does not require any force.
Liquid Control
Sensor control with boiling point detection
Moist or liquid products can quickly reach boiling point during vacuuming. Moist products can even boil cold. That is why Henkelman has equipped sensor control with an extra option: Liquid Control. When you activate this function, the sensor will quickly and accurately detect the vapor phase of a moist or liquid product. This prevents the product from reaching boiling point during vacuuming. This will avoid damage to the product and the machine.

  • The sensor stops the vacuuming phase at the boiling point and the sealing phase is started.
Red meat
Prevent drip, increase quality
Can you keep red meat longer? Now it is! Henkelman was the first in the market to develop the preventive red meat program. This prevents drip: the leaking of meat moisture.
What's the problem?
Red meat contains a high percentage of water. This water, mixed with a protein called myoglobin, gives meat its red color. If meat is exposed to low pressure during vacuuming, the meat moisture will leak out. In addition, air bubbles of gas that escape from the meat then appear. This phenomenon can have a negative effect on the quality of the packaging. Henkelman's red meat program prevents that!
  • Advantages of the 'Red Meat' program:
  • no drip, so no loss of meat moisture;
  • no formation of air bubbles;
  • tighter packaging;
  • better presentation;
  • longer shelf life;
  • improving product quality.

For safety: ESD option
ESD stands for electrostatic discharge, or electrostatic discharge. If ESD occurs during the vacuuming process, it can cause damage to the product. That is why Henkelman has made the models in the Boxer and Falcon series ESD-ready. Extensive testing has demonstrated the validity of the ESD option. Each model with this option comes with a special TÜV certificate. The ESD option is widely used for packaging electronic parts such as wafers, chips, motherboards and prints.
What damage can you prevent?
With the ESD option, you can prevent the following negative effects for specific components:
  • breakdown of the insulation;
  • breakdown of semiconductors;
  • amalgamation of conductive networks;
  • occurrence of untraceable errors;
  • deterioration of part performance;
  • premature failure of the component.
  • Ensure optimal ESD protection: use special ESD vacuum bags together with a machine with ESD option.
Also use ESD vacuum bags together with an ESD vacuum packaging machine.
Sensor Control
Sensor control
Regardless of the volume, always achieve the desired ultimate vacuum: that is the greatest advantage of sensor control. The machine will then calculate itself when the set percentage has been reached. Sensor control is very practical when different quantities of product have to be packed.
Advantages of Sensor Control
the certainty of a constant final result (always exactly the same final vacuum);
ease of use (it is not necessary to constantly adjust the time setting);
optimal cycle time (machine stops once ultimate vacuum is reached).
That is how it works:
